Last week the UK Government washed its hands of any responsibility to the arts or hospitality sector and particularly the live music industry. We are now fully expected to re-open our doors on the 4th July with magic beans.
We’ve been forced to make a decision between permanent closure, and the loss of hundred of jobs or to open on a wing and a prayer, while potentially risking public health.
Our venues are expected to operate a new, non-viable business model (NO LIVE MUSIC OR EVENTS) indefinitely, whilst increasing health risks within our community… and that should absolutely NOT be our decision to make.
The Government have been provided with detailed industry data / feedback and have made their decision based on passing on all responsibility (to you and to those businesses). So if or when we do re-open, be sure to hold them culpable for any negative future ramifications… and not the operators!

Major Lazer five years ago at The Victoria. The Jamaican-American electronic dance music trio were presenting “Lean On”, which had been released just a few days before. We’ have just passed “Imbolic” a day on the Pagan calendar that marks the halfway point between Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox
SO … a new beginning, as the light starts it’s return!
Another perspective on the term ‘hand of glory’ is that it derives from the French ‘main de glorie’, the name for the supposedly magical mandrake root – ‘mandrogore’ being the French for mandrake.
The legend of the hand was thought to be related to the legends of the mandrake, a plant that was believed to grow under the gallows from the seed of a hanged man. Their leaves were thought to resemble hands.

Peckham’s Honey Hahs played for us one year ago. Having been together for such a short time, their beautiful songs and melodies have made a lot of waves, and they have already played shows with the likes of Shame, Goat Girl and Fat White Family (whose album they also perform on).

Our pub gets it’s name from a reverred magical item from ancient times, before texting, gluten intolerance and baby-mocha-choco-frappa-lattes. This item was called a ‘hand of glory’, and it was made from the dried, pickled hand of a man who had been hanged. When used as either a candle or candle holder it gave it’s owner special powers! One of it’s alleged magical properties was to only give light to the holder, leaving others in darkness.
