Last week the UK Government washed its hands of any responsibility to the arts or hospitality sector and particularly the live music industry. We are now fully expected to re-open our doors on the 4th July with magic beans.
We’ve been forced to make a decision between permanent closure, and the loss of hundred of jobs or to open on a wing and a prayer, while potentially risking public health.
Our venues are expected to operate a new, non-viable business model (NO LIVE MUSIC OR EVENTS) indefinitely, whilst increasing health risks within our community… and that should absolutely NOT be our decision to make.
The Government have been provided with detailed industry data / feedback and have made their decision based on passing on all responsibility (to you and to those businesses). So if or when we do re-open, be sure to hold them culpable for any negative future ramifications… and not the operators!

Major Lazer five years ago at The Victoria. The Jamaican-American electronic dance music trio were presenting “Lean On”, which had been released just a few days before. We’ have just passed “Imbolic” a day on the Pagan calendar that marks the halfway point between Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox
SO … a new beginning, as the light starts it’s return!
Another perspective on the term ‘hand of glory’ is that it derives from the French ‘main de glorie’, the name for the supposedly magical mandrake root – ‘mandrogore’ being the French for mandrake.
The legend of the hand was thought to be related to the legends of the mandrake, a plant that was believed to grow under the gallows from the seed of a hanged man. Their leaves were thought to resemble hands.

Peckham’s Honey Hahs played for us one year ago. Having been together for such a short time, their beautiful songs and melodies have made a lot of waves, and they have already played shows with the likes of Shame, Goat Girl and Fat White Family (whose album they also perform on).

Our pub gets it’s name from a reverred magical item from ancient times, before texting, gluten intolerance and baby-mocha-choco-frappa-lattes. This item was called a ‘hand of glory’, and it was made from the dried, pickled hand of a man who had been hanged. When used as either a candle or candle holder it gave it’s owner special powers! One of it’s alleged magical properties was to only give light to the holder, leaving others in darkness.

RIP Daniel Johnston
It is with a heavy heart that we learned of the passing of Daniel Johnston earlier last month. Daniel was a cult outsider folk artist whose childlike pleas for love captivated the likes of Kurt Cobain, Matt Groening and Tom Waits. He was 58. Check out some of Daniel’s music HERE.

This months throwback is to two years ago when John Maus played an astounding gig for JSC at The Victoria. The day before the release of “Screen Memories”, his fourth studio album and first set of newly-recorded music since “We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves” released in 2011.

In true Puck fashion, the brief is open to interpretation. Each Puck artist must submit two pieces that are linked conceptual or aesthetically…. One to be cast into fiery Hell….. the other to be elevated to fluffy Heaven.

On the edition of 9 November 1979, hosted by Tim Rice, a discussion was held about the then-new film Monty Python’s Life of Brian, which been banned by many local councils and caused protests throughout the world with accusations that it was blasphemous. To argue in favour of this accusation were broadcaster and noted Christian Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood (the then Bishop of Southwark). In its defence were two members of the Monty Python team, John Cleese and Michael Palin.
A sketch from the 80s TV series “Not the Nine O’Clock News” commenting on the controversy created by the Monty Python’s film: The Life of Brian and satirising the above debate by turning it on its head, making it about offence caused to ‘Pythonists’ by a film about the life of Christ, which not-so-subtley lampoons ‘Brian’ and curiously has a character with the initials ‘J.C’, which could be taken to mean ‘John Cleese’.

After a sold out debut, MILKY’S second ever show took place on the bleak mid Wednesday 16th January at The Victoria. Lotsa lovely comedians as well as live interludes from the inappropriately named “Shit Band”. Phoebe Walsh, Mawaan Rizwan, Brett Goldstein, Gabby Best aaaand J-J-J-Jamie Demetriou … all the pros were there! We have a new cider on draft from Umbrella! A delicate, light and aromatic apple cider. Made with apples purchased directly from farmers in Kent. Based on dessert apples, mainly Egremont Russet, this style doesn’t have the tannic finish you normally find in traditional cider apple varieties. Instead, you have an easy drinking, thirst quenching and deliciously fresh and half sweet cider. Made in Holloway, North London!

The original East London Arts collective, we create beautiful and unique exhibitions, events, merchandise, prints, media content and publications. The organisation was born out of much celebrated Shoreditch bar and exhibition space Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes in London in 2001.
The unusual name of this founding business is derived from the two 1980s bag and shoe wholesaler signs that hang on the buildings original shop front.
