Marcus Oakley ‘Flotsam & Jetsam’10th June - 10th July, 2007

Traditionally, flotsam and jetsam are words that describe goods of potential value that have been thrown into the ocean

London Based illustrator/artist Marcus Oakley is originally from Acle village in Norfolk. He is 1/3 of the curatorial team behind ‘The Side Effects of Urethane’ that strives to promote positive awareness of the creativity within and around skateboard culture. He is also the founder of ‘Banjo Art Collective’, which he began in ‘99 with the intention of bringing a group of artists together.

Over the last few years Oakley’s work has been related to the 1970’s, his simplistic paintings reflect the decade’s architecture, fashion, graphics and typography. The naïve and unsophisticated quality to his paintings suggest influence from his childhood in Norfolk, which he claims to have inspired him along with the harmonic and melodic music of the Beach Boys and the pastoral delights of the countryside. Since 2003 inspiration came from turning his artwork into sound, making music under the name of ‘The Sunflower Band’.
