As lighting transitions from natural white to warm red, through green then blue, storybook creatures hide and reveal themselves on the walls of Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes, creating a magical ancient document of forna and flora from once newly discovered lands.

Arguably the most ambitious and impressive installation we have ever produced for Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes, according to the venue’s mandate, Carnovsky’s La Selva RGB The black series does not simply constitute pictures on walls but proposes an all consuming, floor to ceiling experience.

Carnovsky La Selva RGB The Black Series

For their new exhibition at Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes, Carnovsky have created a series of new works including wallpapers and limited edition prints. The work represents an evolution of thier RGB project: ‘RGB – The black series’ and they explore a new theme: The Night.

The inverted works, printed on a black background follow Carnovsky’s original RGB principle but when viewed under their RGB lighting technique, the worlds appear in negative. Following the internal spaces natural divide the artist have separated the installation into two parts, one white and one black, representing day and the night.

As a piece of design, gorgeous collaged etchings reproduced in large format and illuminated using their RGB lighting technique present fabulous creatures and exuberant, twisted and dense vegetation. The artworks layers connect to one another but as the images pass from revealed to hidden they may also evoke in the viewer a different psychological or emotional resonance.

The selection of etchings within the narrative of La Selva (The Jungle); elephants, monkeys, komodo dragons, dodos… can be seen to present nature in its mythological, now commodified form and more pertinently the work seems to explore mandkind’s modern obsession with cataloguing, ordering and ultimately controlling the natural world via the mastery of science.

While the effect is best viewed after dark it can also be achieved looking at the work through Red, Green or Blue filters in daylight.

Carnovsky are Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla from Milan, Italy. Together they create beautiful artworks that mutate and interact with different chromatic stimulus. The RGB technique consists of three images printed in a single primary colour overlaid to form a multi-layered print. Placing a red, green or blue light onto the work conceals all but one of the images, while white light reveals the beauty of the montage in its entirety.

JAGUARSHOES COLLECTIVE create beautiful and unique products, exhibitions, events, publications and world renowned venues. The arts organisation was born out of much celebrated Shoreditch bar and exhibition space Dream Bags Jaguar Shoesin London in 2002.
