We recently went record shopping with Nick Powell, where he talked us though some of his favourite spots to go digging in the big smoke.

Soul & Dance Exchange, Notting Hill:

“A shop I’ve been frequently since the age of 14 or so (creaming myself over Defected promos lolz), this moody little shop has been a mainstay of my London record shopping sprees for a reason. The sheer quantity of largely essential House, Disco and Techno 12s in great condition is drool worthy. Notable “YES!” moments that are included in my mix are that fruity Pal Joey number and that Boo Williams track on Green Velvet’s label Relief.”

Phonica Records, Soho:

“An obvious choice but I been buying one record a fortnight there for yars darling. A track I would of probably missed out on if I hadn’t been there at the right moment is that cheeky Wyndell Long bumpy track. And JTC’S “Recall”. Rare.”

Alan’s Records, East Finchley:

“I must admit to only having frequently this joyous place once, but what a time it was. I, a young man, venturing to the outer fringes of zone 3, NORTH London (gasp), and in the middle of suburbia most sinister I find one of the friendliest marts I’ve ever happened upon. Any record (and there were thousands) I was allowed to hear through the shop’s soundsystem. Possibly my favourite cut on the mix, “Trackwerk”, was found here. Even if I couldn’t hear the track before buying, “2 Men From Jersey” = shoddily produced late 80s hip house and “Trackwerk” = Kraftwerk samples galore. Winner.”

He’ll be playing all night long on the Recession Sound System Funktion One custom rig, expect nothing more than the best party mix Shoreditch has to offer.
